Switzerland's Davos (Reuters) According to its chief technology officer, Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson (BS:ERICAs) anticipates that under President Donald Trump, the US will remain at the forefront of technological advancement, which the firm is prepared to capitalize on.

CTO Erik Ekudden told the Reuters Global Markets Forum that the industry is currently in the full-execution phase of OpenRAN and that "of course we intend to continue to lead and drive that industry development."

In their radio networks, operators can mix and match vendors thanks to OpenRAN. With their in-house technology, Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia (HE:NOKIA) control the majority of the worldwide telecom equipment industry.

According to Ekudden, the emphasis is currently on developing artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and using AI to maximize 5G network performance.

He continued by saying that every nation must have an innovation strategy in place to build on 5G and AI.

"I expect U.S. to continue to push ahead in that, and if anything, the opportunities just seem fantastic right now to put in an extra gear and then make sure that we are part of that," Ekudden stated.

Additionally, he noted that as the new U.S. government raises the possibility of a trade war, Ericsson's local-for-local manufacturing strategy gives it an edge by reducing its reliance on international supply chains and trade.

Ekudden asserted that it was too soon to make any assumptions about tariffs.
